About our Dojo

OUR SCHOOL

Seishin Shotokan Karate is located in Apple Valley, California and has been in operation since November 2000.  We currently offer top quality martial arts instruction in Apple Valley, Victorville and Hesperia.  We offer age-appropriate classes with a strong emphasis on the core values of the martial arts – self-discipline, self-confidence and self-control.  Our programs blend traditional values with the current needs of our members, and we provide a proven system for success and advancement in our art of Shotokan karate without diluting our traditional base.

Seishin Shotokan Karate is an officially accredited dojo of the Shotokan Karate International Federation that is led by the world-famous karate master Hirokazu Kanazawa, 10th Degree Black Belt.  Master Kanazawa and his world class instructors have already visited our dojo in Apple Valley on four separate occasions as part of their annual world tour, most recently in June 2010.  Master Kanazawa’s organization currently includes about 2 million members in over 100 different countries around the world so it was a great honor for our dojo to host the highest ranked Shotokan karate master in the world.  Seishin Shotokan Karate and its instructors are officially licensed by the Shotokan Karate International Federation (SKIF) so you can be sure that we provide only the highest quality instruction in our programs.

If you are serious about becoming a top class martial artist, then you should join our club right away.  Come and visit one of our exciting lessons and see for yourself that we deliver a quality martial arts program that both meets and exceeds all of your expectations.

OUR STYLE

Our style of karate is Shotokan.  Shotokan karate is one of the “Big Four” styles of karate and was first introduced to the Japanese mainland in the early 1920s by a karate master called Gichin Funakoshi.  Gichin Funakoshi is considered by many scholars to be the modern day father of karate and is largely responsible for the spread of karate in the early part of the 20th century.  The style of Shotokan continues to be one of the main styles of karate practiced nowadays and there are many clubs not just in the United States but around the world that practice this popular style.

Shotokan karate is renowned for its strong stances, powerful techniques, dynamic katas and decisive kumite applications.  Shotokan is one of the most highly developed styles available today and has numerous high-profile masters who travel around the world each year giving top quality seminars.

Schedule Changes for September 2015

RE: Schedule changes for September (IMPORTANT! Please read!)

Dear Members,

Recently I asked for feedback regarding schedule changes. I received some through comments and private messages and also in person conversations. We track attendance numbers at the dojo each month to see how classes are doing. Also as student ranks change every quarter after testing, small schedule changes happen periodically due to changing numbers at different ranks.

There will be NO CHANGES to both Tiny Tigers classes – Wed 5:30 – 6:00pm and Thursday 6:00 – 6:30pm as usual. Also no changes to the Junior Shotokan class on Thursday from 5:00 – 6:00pm, the Family Shotokan class on Friday from 5:30 – 6:30pm or any of the Saturday morning classes.

Based on our current Shotokan students we are implementing the following small changes based on student numbers and member feedback:
1. Wednesday evening Shotokan family class will stay the same from 6:00 – 7:00pm and IN ADDITION TO this an extra half hour from 7:00 – 7:30pm will be offered as Open Training for any members who would like to stay longer and practice some more on what they learned in class or for those who would like to work on something different.
2. Wednesday evening brown and black belt class will be cancelled. There have only been 2 – 4 students per week showing up to this class. Keep reading as you will be taken care of on Thursday and Friday.
3. Thursday evening Purple to Black belt class 6:30 – 7:30pm and IN ADDITION TO this an extra half hour from 7:30 – 8:00pm will be offered with a focus on Black Belt content for extra training. However, purple and brown belts will be welcome to stay also for Open Training and work separately on their content with access to the instructor for questions. If no Black Belts show up, you will be the primary focus.
4. Friday evening Brown and Black belt class 6:30 – 7:30pm and IN ADDITION TO this an extra half hour from 7:30 – 8:00pm will be offered with a focus on Black Belt content for extra training. This will be exclusively Black Belts ONLY! Brown belts are welcome to stay and use the floor space for their own training if they wish to.

The additional Open Training and Black Belt Focus content half hours are being added based on member feedback and on an instructor group discussion on how to improve the overall ability and content knowledge of our advanced students. This is a trial and will be implemented through the end of this year. There will be NO ADDITIONAL CHARGE for these extra half hour training sessions and you will be required to attend the hour of training beforehand. So essentially you are getting 90 minute training sessions.
Our expectation is that you take this opportunity seriously and that you show up to class regularly and up your level of commitment and overall content knowledge. I also recommend that members take advantage of the open sessions, as we instructors always notice those who make extra effort. Please contact any one of our instructors directly with questions. Printed schedules will be available in the dojo and these changes will be effective NEXT WEEK beginning on September 9th!!

Thank you.
Paul Walker, Chief Instructor
